Top Five Computer Tips

If you do no other maintenance on your computer, do these 5 things.

5. Reboot

If you leave your computer on, it can run updates and scans when you are away.  It can download and "pre-install" updates to the operating system.   It also minimizes your "wait" time - the computer is ready to go when you are ready to work.  However, f you don't turn your computer off daily,  reboot your computer at least once a week to allow updates to process, clean up system memory, and give the operating system a fresh start.  This will keep you protected (updates) and keep your system running optimally.

4. Don't Install Freeware

Utilities and gadgets that claim to make your computer run faster usually don't. You can't make an airplane go faster by adding more cargo, and your computer will not run faster with more programs or "apps" running. Most  "free" utilities are just advertising machines, and they perform small, insignificant tasks that they report as "disinfections" or "cleanup", but really aren't significant.

3. Keep Windows / MacOS Updated

Most infections/intrusions occur AFTER vulnerabilities have been discovered and patched.  Consumers who do not keep their computers up to date are taking an unnecessary risk - if you live and work online, you need to keep your operating system updated to minimize your risk of infection.

2. Back Up Your Files

Read the "Data Backup" page for detailed information on the subject, but nothing lasts forever - always keep two copies of your data: one on your computer, and one on a backup device. You should keep a backup copy "off-site" as well, in case of fire or flood. A safe deposit box, a desk drawer in your office, anywhere other than the building that houses your computer

1. Learn Your Data Location

This is the most basic thing you can learn about your computer - where are my files? I regularly find that people just don't know - they click "save" and then they click "open" and if their stuff doesn't pop right up, they call for help.  Learn your file system, and take control of your data!
